It can be inferred…

Reading comprehension 1
This part consists of two passages, each followed by several related questions. For each question, choose the most appropriate answer based on the text

The Enclosure Acts were a series of Parliamentary laws in the United Kingdom that allowed landowners to fence open fields and common lands. The majority of the Enclosure Acts were passed between 1750 and 1860. Under these acts, 21% of the land in England was enclosed – nearly 28,000 square kilometers

Until the Enclosure Acts came into force in England in the eighteenth century, horses rarely needed to jump fences: these acts brought fences and boundaries to many formerly open parts of the country as the common fields and forests were divided among the wealthy landowners. As a result, fox hunters needed horses that were able to jump these new obstacles in order to chase foxes

In France, horse-jumping shows began when cross-country races added jumping requirements as the horses raced literally across the country. These races were fun for the participants, but the crowds had a hard time following the horses during their fifty or hundred kilometer races. Soon the French realized that jumping in a stadium was a better spectator sport that made money for everyone

At the Dublin Show in 1868, “high leaps” and “wide leaps” were first used to test horses for hunting in the field. In 1881, the first permanent jumping course was built, and the sport of show jumping began to develop. In 1900, the first Olympic Games jumping competitions were held in France, and in 1907, jumping was introduced as a competitive sport in England. Today, horse jumping competitions are held worldwide. Ironically, fox hunting, the origin of the sport, has now been outlawed in England

במשפט נכתב: "as the horses raced literally across the country" – כלומר, הסוסים התחרו מצד אחד של המדינה אל הצד השני במובן המילולי ולא במובן המטאפורי של הביטוי.
